Explore the Nidderdale Greenway

For a scenic and tranquil walk or cycle, the Nidderdale Greenway is a 4-mile traffic-free path connecting Harrogate to Ripley. Following the route of a former railway line, it offers beautiful views of the Nidd Gorge Viaduct and is ideal for a leisurely outing. Only a 10-15 minute drive from your stay at Nutkin Yurt.

Discover the Stray: Harrogate’s Urban Oasis

The Stray is a vast 200-acre parkland encircling Harrogate’s town centre. Established in 1778, it’s a protected common area offering ample space for walking, picnicking, or simply unwinding amidst nature. Its central location makes it an accessible and peaceful retreat for adults looking to relax. Harrogate Spa town and the stay is a 20 minute drive from Nutkin Yurt and a beautiful town to visit for the day. 

Embark on a Historic Walk to Markenfield Hall

For those interested in history and nature, a 6-mile circular walk from Fountains Abbey to Markenfield Hall offers a blend of both. The route passes through picturesque countryside, meadows, and woodlands, providing a serene environment for a reflective walk. Markenfield Hall, a moated manor house, adds a touch of historical intrigue to the journey.

Wander through Valley Gardens, Harrogate

A short stroll from the town centre, Valley Gardens is a Grade II listed park featuring elegant floral displays, historical buildings, and shaded woodland walks. It’s a great spot for a quiet walk, reading on a bench, or enjoying the seasonal blooms. Don’t miss the Sun Pavilion and Colonnades—ideal for photography and relaxation.

Climb to the Top of Brimham Rocks

Managed by the National Trust but free to explore on foot, Brimham Rocks near Pateley Bridge offers dramatic rock formations, panoramic views, and endless opportunities for hiking or photography. It’s a unique natural playground—ideal for adults who enjoy geology, mindfulness walks, or simply soaking in wild Yorkshire landscapes. (note that parking is chargeable)

Cycle the Way of the Roses (Segment)

This coast-to-coast route passes through Ripon and Harrogate. Even if you’re not up for the full ride, cycling a local segment is a rewarding way to explore rural North Yorkshire at no cost. You’ll find quiet lanes, historic villages, and pubs perfect for a rest stop.

Visit Ripon Cathedral

Dating back over 1,300 years, Ripon Cathedral is free to enter and open daily. It’s a serene space to admire medieval architecture, stained glass, and stone carvings. Look out for free lunchtime concerts or seasonal exhibitions that make the visit even more special. Ripon is a 10-15 minute drive from Nutkin Yurt and is a market town with delicious butchers and cute bars and restaurants. 

Walk the Harrogate Ringway

The Harrogate Ringway is a 20-mile circular trail around the town. While it can be done in stages, it’s a wonderful way to explore woodlands, riversides, and rural scenery at your own pace. Great for solo walkers or couples looking for a day-long outdoor challenge

Staveley Nature Reserve

If you’re looking for a tranquil escape into nature, Staveley Nature Reserve is one of North Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets. Tucked just outside Knaresborough and only a 4 minute drive from Nutkin Yurt, this peaceful reserve is perfect for a slow, mindful wander or a quiet family outing and should definitely be on your to do list whilst staying with us at Nutkin.

Wondering the Boroughbridge Canal

The Boroughbridge Canal Walk is the kind of easy-going countryside stroll that blends natural beauty with a touch of local heritage. Beginning in the historic market town of Boroughbridge, this walk can follow the River Ure or loop into the peaceful Ripon Canal, depending on how far you want to go. You can add in some extra steps and walking to the canal is perfectly doable from Nutkin Yurt  taking a meander through Boroughbridge town on the way.

Visit the market town of Pateley Bridge

An idillic countryside town in the heart of rural North Yorkshire. A quaint high street with traditional butchers, the town edged in countryside walks. Delicious pancakes at The Pancake House after a morning of wandering. Come September immerse yourself in countryside life with the Nidderdale Agricultural Show. 

A scenic and rural 25 minute drive away from Nutkin Yurt, but well worth it.
